One and All Cycling Youth Academy

November 2011 saw the official launch of the One and All Cycling Youth Academy. Supporting the launch of the Academy were ex-pros Tom Southam (now Sports Director at Drapac Professional Cycling) and Yanto Barker (formerly riding with One Pro Cycling) and current pro Chris Opie (The Bike Channel). Former Olympic track silver medallist Wendy Houvenaghel is also an Academy patron and enthusiastic supporter, as is Helston born Steve Lampier, who is currently racing for the JLT Condor.

The Academy's aim is to create more opportunities for participation in a variety of cycling related activities for all young people under the age of 18 in Cornwall. It hopes to identify those riders with the ambition, talent and drive to compete at regional and national level, and perhaps ultimately to progress towards professional competition. The Academy structure caters for any Under 18 rider in the club who will participate in weekly coaching sessions to develop on and off bike skills. Targeted coaching of the ‘development squad’ then provides an opportunity for talented riders to progress through more structured advice, training and support. Through the Academy riders have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of cycling disciplines including Road and Time Trial, Mountain Bike, BMX, Track and Cyclo-Cross.

The Academy is run by British Cycling qualified coaches, as well as volunteers, who have combined their knowledge and expertise to give the younger riders in the club the best chance of achieving their cycling goals and ambitions. These could range from riding their first ever race to pulling on a National Champion’s jersey. To support the coaches there is also a strong management team in place, busy working on promoting the Youth Academy brand, and developing sponsorship opportunities.
More than 100 youngsters attended the Youth Academy launch. The Academy currently has over 80 youngsters registered as members, and find out more by contacting Steve Maynard on 07896 787272.

Rod James, Chairman of One and All Cycling, said "We are delighted as a club to support this great new venture that will open up many exciting opportunities for young cyclists in Cornwall. It will enable us to invest in a whole new pool of talent and ambition and increase the number of opportunities for young people to enjoy cycling as a sport and leisure activity."

Key to the successful development of One and All Cycling has been the club’s commitment to cycling at a ‘grassroots’ level, recognising that everybody has to start somewhere. The club has always been very keen to encourage younger members to join and has access to a closed circuit which is available for use to run safe, off-road skills training sessions for youth riders as well as senior club members. To run these coaching sessions One and All Cycling has supported several members to gain their coaching qualifications.

The Academy has been structured so that if follows a Bronze, Silver and Gold system. All riders under the age of 18 years automatically qualify for the Bronze Tier where on completion of closed circuit skills sessions they then qualify The Silver and Gold tiers cater for those riders with ambitions to take their cycling on to another level. Riders who move on to the higher levels form what is referred to as the ‘Development Squad’. Riders at this level participate in regular coaching sessions at weekends and during the week. Most importantly they benefit from a more hands-on approach in terms of coaching support, annual planning, goal setting and identification of the performance progression pathways.

If you are interested in your child joining the Academy, come along to Wheal Jane Technical Park (the old Wheal Jane mining site), Baldhu, nr. Truro on a Sunday morning around 9.00 a.m. and meet the coaches. They are welcome to have two taster sessions before we expect them to join the Academy. Annual subscription is £10.00 from the date of joining, and new members get free British Cycling membership (which includes third party insurance) for the first year.
